Using a suggestion from Erin today:

When growing up did your family share your love of books? If so, did one person get you into reading? And, do you have any family-oriented memories with books and reading? (Family trips to bookstore, reading the same book as a sibling or parent, etc.)

Don’t forget to leave a link to your actual response (so people don’t have to go searching for it) in the comments—or if you prefer, leave your answers in the comments themselves!

Since young, I am the only reader in the family. Although at that time my parents did emphasize to us about the importance of books, what their intention was to read more books and be knowledgeable in order to get good grades in school. However, both my parents are not avid readers; my father only reads the newspapers and occasionally some geographical books. In the past, sometimes my mother read novels but that was only when she wanted to pass the time. My younger sister doesn't share her passion for reading the way I do, so that leaves me being the only "heavy" reader in the family. Anyway, no one influences me about my reading; I just happen to love reading, that's it. Some people may find pleasure in things like food, computer games, etc but for me I find my pleasure in books.

  1. It's wonderful that you still managed to become an avid reader -- I tell my daughter: you can learn anything if you can read.

    Happy BTT!

My parents weren't reader either, but they did take me to the library. My Mom wanted me to study and get good grades, so she encouraged me. Happy BTT!

It's funny--my mom taught me to read before I was 3, we always had a lot of books in the house, and my mom bribed me with books to behave while shopping, we had weekly trips to the library, and yet neither of my parents read much.

It was a successful case of "do as I say, not as I do," I guess.

You know what, Mel? I think we have just given the same answer but in different wording... LOL. I feel like giving you a hug, my long lost twin sister...

  5. Great answer :) I love that even though you didn't have a strong role model for reading a lot, that you still became an avid reader. That's awesome :)

Have a great day, and Happy Reading!!!

It's great that even though you didn't have anyone influence you, you still became a "heavy reader". I think nothing's better than reading. I hope you get to influence other people to start ^_^

    Happy BTT!!

Nice answer!! Isn't it funny, how even in families, there are so many different personalities? I love this question!

    Happy Thursday!

  8. Amy Says:

It's pretty much the same for me. My mom always encouraged me to read but never really read much herself. She is a big fan of TV though too...and me--not so much.

I agree about finding pleasure in books the same way others find pleasure in food or other activities. We don't always need to be influenced by others. Diane

  10. Interesting how you persevered in your love of reading in spite of the lack of "heavy" readers in your family! Good for you!
I can't imagine what it would be like not to love books and reading..

I so agree with you, Marianne! Yes, we can learn everything through reading! :)

Hey Kristy! I used to visit my school library, but we were only allowed to borrow a book! LOL. My mom did bring us to the public library, but it was like once or twice in a month because we get to borrow more books and we have much longer loan period as compared to the school, hehe.

Hey Darla! I'm impressed that you've started reading at such a young age! Wow! I'll definitely influence my daughter in reading...starting from now, LOL!

Hi Alice! {Hugs} My long lost sister...LOL! Now where's Julia?! LOL.

Hi Stacy! It's funny eh, but I'm glad I read! :D

Hi Den! Yeah, I will start to influence my daughter!!! In fact, she wants me to read nursery rhymes to her almost every night. ;P

Hi Stephanie! I agree it's always great & fun to read everyone's answers. Happy reading!

Hi Amy! I believe our moms don't have much time for reading because they are busily ensuring the family is well taken care of. :D

Hi Diane! Thanks for stopping by! I'm hoping I will influence my daughter into reading her books through her adulthood, hehe.

    Happy reading, everyone!

  21. Daphne Says:

My mom wasn't much of a reader either but she always emphasized the importance of a good education. I think she encouraged me to read for that reason. Plus, it kept me occupied!!

  22. Melody Says:

I absolutely agree with you on that one, Julia! :)

    Thanks, Chris!

Hi Daphne! Looks like we got the same answer, hehe. ;)
