Booking Through ThursdayCheck Spelling

Mariel suggested this week’s question.

Are you a spine breaker? Or a dog-earer? Do you expect to keep your books in pristine condition even after you have read them? Does watching other readers bend the cover all the way round make you flinch or squeal in pain?

I suppose I am a perfectionist when it comes to books handling and maintenance. I hate seeing my books with bended spines, and I am definitely not a dog-earer (I love bookmarks and have been collecting them for quite a while). Although I do not wrap my books with clear plastic cover sheets (it would be great if they are), I definitely keep them in pristine condition.

I think it would be great if all library patrons are more considerate and treat the library books with care. Several years back, I was dismayed to find a book I borrowed had a few pages being ripped off, and the worst thing is that the pages which were missing are considered 'critical' scenes to the story. Can you imagine how stumped (or angry) I was at that moment? Personally, I have no comment on how other readers treat their own books, but I think they should be more considerate when treating the library books, after all they are meant to share.

A BIG thank you to Alice and Julia for presenting this award to me! It is always nice to hear from fellow blog buddies that they enjoy reading my blog. Alice and Julia are two of my good blog buddies (not to mention good friends too!), so it goes without saying that I find their blogs addictive too! Thanks for everything, ladies!

Although I would like to pass this award to all my blog buddies, however this time around I will highlight two new-to-me blogs which I find them addictive too. They are Violet Crush and A Guy's Moleskine Notebook.

Side note: Naida of The Bookworm is creative enough to come up with this award, and don't you think the button is lovely?

I used to hate to see the spine do anything, lol. But I guess I have gotten over it. Thanks for visiting my blog :)

  2. Julia Says:

Melody - you know we be good friends in a long run :) Your friendship are always important to me. And I agree that Naida should deserve this award for her creative and the button :)

As for the Booking Through Thursday, I so agree with in keeping the book pristine condition. I like to keep my books this way too :)

Already missed talking to you, as always :) Hope things are fine at home...hope you have a good thursday and weekend ahead!

Hi Melody! I'm glad we are friends and visiting your blog is almost like an auto-switch. LOL.

I understand how you feel. I recently got back the book I lent out and guess what? The cover was bent... the pages dog-eared... the inside back cover was peeled... I don't know how this can happened. Not to mention the book had aged so much, I was just speechless. :(

Like you, I keep my books in tip top condition too, and in covered bookshelves to minimise dust coating them. Oh we booklovers. LOL.

I agree with you on maintaining the library books. I guess one can use their own books as they like, but when it comes to others books, one should handle them carefully.

Thank you so much for the award Melody, I will now have a shiny new button on my blogs side bar :)

btw, I find your blog addictive too :)

  5. Debi Says:

Oh, I hate that, too! Just a few months ago, I was trying to read one of The Sandman books from the library, only to find that someone had cut out several pages throughout it. So frustrating!

And yep, your blog is addicting!

  6. Just found your blog and will be back to visit. I think the newer books have a different feel to them - they ar sometimes so stiff. That is why I like used books.

  7. karen! Says:

People mistreating library books is definitely one of my pet peeves as well.

    Happy Thursday!

  8. Yvonne Says:

I'm exactly the same way you are! I know how you feel.

  9. Sunny Says:

I'm with you! I have to keep my books in near perfect conditiont too.

  10. Mary Beth Says:

I love bookmarks but I constantly lose them. I'll use anything flat - I think I'm using a railway schedule at the moment. However I feel about my books, those belonging to others outside the immediate family (especially library books) are sacrosanct. Which is why I like to own all the books I read - so I don't have to worry about hurting them:)

  11. Anonymous Says:

Tearing pages out is definitely over the line. How frustrating!

  12. Susan Says:

That's in my answer too. It really bugs me when I check out a book only to find pages missing, or marked-up or stuck together with food. These people should not have library cards!

  13. SmilingSally Says:

Your experience with that library book would have upset me too.

  14. I'm annal about it.

    Conditioning

Oh I have two book giveaways going right now.

  15. Kara Says:

Our answers are very similar...LOL. The library thing is my pet peeve too - I still can't get over that people actually write in library books - why? LOL

  16. Kat Says:

I agree! I can't take seeing books "hurt", be it mine or someone else's. :) The only books I write in are text books, but only the ones that are newsprint copies and not the good ones! Happy BTT!

  17. Iliana Says:

That award is too cute and you totally deserve it my dear :)

I'm with you on wishing library patrons were nicer to books. I especially hate finding crumbs and food stains. Ugh.

  18. Shana Says:

Melody - My library copy of The Other Boleyn Girl was missing five pages. So frustrating!

Books should be handled with care and gentleness, just like cradling a baby in the crook. I'm appalled to see library books that are marked, coffee-stained, page-folded, dog-eared, and written on.

Thanks for your kind words Melody! :)

  20. Jeane Says:

I have conflicting feelings about this. On the one hand, I try to treat books with respect, and my mother taught me to always return things in the same condition (or better) than when you borrowed them- library books too! On the other hand, seeing worn-out library books lets me know at least someone is taking them home, and they're not just getting dusty on the shelf or tossed in a discard sale. It would be nice if all library patrons treated books well, but hey, at least they're reading!

  21. R. Says:

I agree with the library situation, esp when you find pieces on food in them *faint* I will only check out a book after having inspected it properly - people can be so disrespectful...

  22. Ana S. Says:

I'm a perfectionist too. I'm very careful with my books!

Congratulations on the well-deserved award, Melody. The button is indeed great :)

  23. The Bookworm Says:

that would make me angry too if pages out of the book were ripped out!

about the award, glad they gave it to you, yoru blog is great :)
thanks for linking me here as well.

  24. Shonda Says:

I use bookmarks too. I agree with you about library books. If I borrow a brand new book, I will return it in the same condition. Now, if a book's spine is already broken, then I really open the book to read. I just can't be the one to ruin a new book! I love the look and feel of brand new books.

  25. Anonymous Says:

I do cover my books. Books are our love. So we better care for them. Nowadays I gift bookmarks to my nephews and nieces..:)

BTW, congratulations for the award. I too recieved it from Naida!

    Conditioning, anyone?!

  26. Congrats on the awards!

I don't batter my books, but I could probably take better care of them. I usually carry them in my purse wherever I go, so the edges get a little worn sometimes. I used to break spines but I've mostly kicked that habit. :) See--improvement!

  27. Hi, Melody! How are you and your family doing? I hope the new baby isn't keeping you up too much at night. :-)

I agree with you in that I wish people would treat library books with more respect, after all, they do not belong to them and will be shared with many other people.

Your blog is definitely very addictive and so a fitting award for you! :-) Matt and Violet are well deserving of this award! I enjoy both of their blogs.

  28. Melody Says:

Hello, everyone! Thank you so much for your kind comments. I hope you all had a wonderful weekend. :)
