Musing Mondays

Today’s MUSING MONDAYS post is about new authors…

What is your policy when it comes to new authors? Do you feel comfortable purchasing a book or do you prefer to borrow new authors from the library? How often do you 'try out' a new author?

Besides finding books from my favourite authors during my book shopping, I have to say exploring the titles by new (or new-to-me) authors is another of my must-do thing to me while I am at the bookstore. Usually I will stop by the new releases section first, and make sure to grab a copy of the books I want before I dedicate some time to other titles or authors whom I am not familiar with. And guess what, I don't really have a policy with new authors. If I find a book highly recommended by fellow bookbloggers, it definitely sparks my interest so I will make sure to check it out during my next visit to the bookstore.

However, I also do check out new titles/authors during my book shopping. I don't know about you, but I have this mentality of 'not coming out of a bookstore empty-handed' so if it happens that my favourite authors do not have a new book out at that moment, I will browse through the new authors' piles and decide which book will hold my interest. If I like the story premise, I will buy it but then I will have to be picky because I had had experience buying them and ended up disappointed. I know borrowing them from the library will be the wisest choice but nowadays I don't visit the libraries anymore (due to time constraint and moreover I would rather read my books at my own pace).

How about you? Would you buy a book by a new author or would you prefer to borrow it from the library?

  1. Yeah, I definitely have the no empty hands policy with bookstores! LOL!!

    Mine

  2. I get most of my books from the library, but even if I didn't I would still try out new authors. Honestly, I read too much to just stick with the ones that I know.

I try to get most of my books from the library, but recently I've been renting them online. It's a lot less of a hassle. I don't have to worry about due dates, and they always have the book I want available. $20 a month is a little pricey, but the more I think about it, it's worth it.

It depends. I get recommendation from all of you so if the book appeals to me, I'll go for a new author.

You've more or less answered the question for me, Melody. LOL.

I will not hesitate reading authors that are new to me if the premise is interesting. Same goes to the never-walk-out-of-a-bookstore-emptyhanded policy. Now I don't even have to walk into a bookstore because I buy a lot online! :)

  6. Jeane Says:

I like to try new authors but I usually check them out from the library first, before buying anything. Unless I'm at a library sale where they're really cheap, then I pick up whatever looks interesting.

Bluestocking - I'm glad I'm not alone! LOL.

Kate - It's always fun to explore new authors, isn't it? :)

Jessica - That's a great idea! Our used bookstores do rent books too so it's another option for me if I decide not to buy. ;)

Matt - Don't you think we bookbloggers are the best? :P

Alice - LOL. I'm glad we share the same sentiments! I love buying books, either from bookstores or online! ;P

Jeane - Yes, usually I'll buy more new authors' books if there's a booksale! They're hard to resist anyway! ;)

I've had to stop going into bookshops for a while because I can't walk out empty handed either and I've got too many books at home unread and no more space to keep them! I'll read any book that appeals whether it's by an author I know or not.

  9. Jo Says:

The not walking out of a bookshop emptyhanded thing means I don't evn walk into them very often at the moment. Can't trust myself! Lol

  10. caite Says:

Oddly, I can walk out of a bookstore empty handed! Because I have too many books waiting to be read already and I hate to pay full price for a book. Now if I have a really good coupon....

  11. Beth F Says:

I love scouting out new authors and I also can't leave a bookstore empty handed! Wow!!! Love the template.

  12. Sandy Nawrot Says:

I LOVE your new look! Ever since I started blogging, just about everything I read now is new to me, which is a good thing. It is fun discovering them. I have been neglecting my tried and true favorites, which I need to focus on again.

  13. Jenners Says:

OK ... first of all I have to tell you how much I love your blog design! So incredibly cute and fun!

I agree with you -- I definitely don't like leaving the bookstore empty-handed -- it is just WRONG! And I will always be open to new authors or books.

  14. Sherrie Says:

    Hi!
99% of my books come from the library. I get lots of names of books from all the book bloggers! Have a great day!!

    Sherrie

Wow, Melody, I was thrown for a loop when I clicked over here! But I do love your new look...it's wonderful!

I don't really have a policy on the matter. I think if something catches my interest, I pick up from wherever I first see it, be it at the store or the library.

  16. zetor Says:

Is it possible to leave a bookstore emptyhanded, I don't think so!!!

  17. Nise' Says:

Definitely can relate to not being able to leave a bookstore/library with nothing in my hands!

Since I heavily use the library bringing home new authors is much easier.

  18. Ana S. Says:

oh wow, I love love love the new look! Well done, Melody :D

And ideally, I like to try new authors first before investing in their books...either by getting the book from the library, borrowing it from a friend, or even getting it via bookmooch or at a bargain price. But if an author comes well-recommended I take the plunge. I did that recently with Margo Lanagan - you don't normally see me buying hardcover books by authors I've never read before - and well, I didn't regret it!

  19. Yvonne Says:

I always love finding new authors. Paperback Swap has become the greatest thing ever invented for me. LOL

  20. Melody Says:

Margaret, Jo - It's so hard to resist visiting the bookstores, isn't it?

Caite - I need to learn some self-control from you! ;) I'll tell myself not to walk into the bookstore every time I bypass one but I couldn't help but to succumb to the tempation, hehe.

    Beth - Thanks! :)

Sandy - Thanks! I LOVE exploring authors, both new or old! :D

    Jenners - Thank you! :)

Sherrie - I wish I've some time for those library books. *sigh*

Debi - Thanks! I'm glad you like my new template. :) It definitely takes me some time to edit those add on stuff again!

Zetor - Definitely not possible for me to walk out of the store empty-handed! LOL.

Nise' - If I visit the libraries, I'd have brought home dozen of new authors' books too!

Nymeth - Thanks! :D Glad you like it! And thanks to you, I bought that book too! I can't wait to read it! ;)

    Yvonne - For me, it's BookMooch! ;)
