“Life is too short to read bad books.” I’d always heard that, but I still read books through until the end no matter how bad they were because I had this sense of obligation.
That is, until this week when I tried (really tried) to read a book that is utterly boring and unrealistic. I had to stop reading.
Do you read everything all the way through or do you feel life really is too short to read bad books?
I used to read books through until the end, but that was way before when my TBR pile only consisted of 10 books or lesser. That said, it does not mean I will totally give up on a book if the story does not interest me. I will still give it a chance by reading a few more chapters. Another option is I will skim through the book if I want to find out what happened towards the end, or if I still care for the characters. If the story gets too boring and seems to be getting to nowhere, I will then give it up.
What about you?
same here, I try to drag it as far as possible and then I skim :)
I am not as nice as you two! My fastest record so far was 1 page then I dropped the book....but it's a rare occasion....mostly I let it till 1 chapter
I just leave it, then pick it back up later! 2nd try .. and it is not working... ditch it :)
Same as you really, I try to give it a good chance but then if it still isn't capturing my interest I will give up!
Like you. I liek to give it a chance
Here's mine
I will try to skim and pick up before I give up.
Good answer, very diplomatic. :) Here's mine: http://thecrowdedleaf.wordpress.com/2009/11/12/booking-through-thursday-november-12-2009
Your answer is similar to mine, but much more concise. :-)
I will also sometimes skim, particularly if I think it might not be the book that's the trouble, but me. Sometimes I am just not in the mood for a particular book or subject, so I'll skim and/or set aside.
I skim at times and read the last few pages. But for a really bad book, I chuck it away.
Booking through Bad Books
I do read it all the way through, especially if I have agreed to review the book. Some books have suprised me and pulled off a complete turnaround halfway through to end up being very good, others not so much.
I have a 30-40 page rule. If it's not grabbing me by then the book goes back on the shelf for another time. Unless of course it is so horrible that I have to give it away :)
I'm similar to you, I will try but once i'm done i'm done.
Here is my response.

I don't have a specific page number rule; when I put a book down simply depends on my mood and level of patience that day. I don't, however, finish those that don't interest me.
I feel exactly the same. Used to force myself to read them all, now if my interest is lagging I have no qualms about putting a book down and finding something new. I try to give them all a good effort, though.
It really depends on the book and why I'm reading it. However that said, if it's too utterly boring that I can't concentrate at all on it I will let it go.
Meh, toss it; life is harsh. ;)
Hi, everyone! Thank you all for your comments. I apologize for this reply instead of commenting on a one-to-one basis... been trying to catch up on my reading (my books as well as blog reading) lately. Plus, the holiday season is coming up and I'm busy buying things for family and friends (as well as getting some little things for a few of my closest blogger friends). I wish there're more than 24 hrs a day!!
I hope everyone is well and happy reading!
I skim too before I give up totally.
Alice - Yeah. Giving it up totally will be the last resort. ;)
