Today’s MUSING MONDAYS post is about early reading…
Do you remember how you developed a love for reading? Was it from a particular person, or person(s)? Do you remember any books that you read, or were read to you, as a young child? (question courtesy of Diane)
I think I am fascinated with libraries and books since I was in primary school (or perhaps it was way earlier when I was in kindergarten though I have vague memories of it). I can't recall if my first novel is 'Nancy Drew' or books by Enid Blyton, but anyway I was hooked onto them like bees to honey. I just couldn't seem to get enough of them.
I don't recall many of my classmates or family members have that much passion in reading as compared to me. I think I got sucked into reading because it simply is fun and it opens another world to me. By the time I was in Primary Six, I moved on to 'Sweet Dreams' romances and started my first romance novel by Barbara Cartland. And as for the rest, as they say, is history.
What about you? Do you have any memories about your early reading?
I loved libraries when I was little, too. My parents always read to me when I was little and for some reason it stuck with me but not really my sisters.
Loved Nancy Drew!
My mom was a book addict, and I think I got it from her. I got plenty of Dr. Seuss when I was younger, but really got hooked on Nancy Drew, and then later, Stephen King and Dean Koontz. I still love a good horror novel!
It goes to show that book addicts start young.
I am so glad you fell in love with reading, Melody. I was born into it really, my parents both being avid readers. My brother somehow missed that gene, although I think he does read now and then these days.
My love of reading is from my parents too. I don't remember learning to read - did it come naturally to me??
same here, none of my friends and family I knew read much. The first book I read was Nancy Drew, but the first one I checked out of the School lobrary was 'Beauty and the Beast" :)
Welcome back Melody. Hope you had a great time.
One of niece reads like crazy!
My brothers used to read but now they don't have time! Or so they say..
Here is my post
Reading is something that's always been there for me. I can't quite remember how it started. I was never read to, but there were always books around the house, so I guess that at some point I started to pick them up? Some of the first books I remember receiving as gifts were these gorgeously illustrated fairy tale collections. You could say they left a mark on me :P
I can say I been reading all of my life. But while my parent always buy books for me, they didn't read to me. My teachers did. But my parent have always push me to read, because they wanted me to learn English back than. My love for reading came from that and the teachers influence from reading to me.
Books were everywhere in our house and my mom read "real" books to us (yes, kids' books, too), so we had lots of incentive to graduate to more complicated novels to read on our own.
I've always been labelled by my schoolmates and family as the bookworm. Or lone ranger. Enid Blyton got me started, that's for sure. But I also remembered the Peter and Jane series long before that.
We would have been fast friends in school too Melody because we would have been sharing those Sweet Dreams books! haha...
So good to see you back from your break. Hope you read lots of good things and enjoyed the time with your little ones!
Trish - There's just something about the libraries, eh? My parents don't read to me (since they don't speak English) but they're always encouraging!
Sandy - Oh, I love Stephen King and Dean Koontz! I've read most of Koontz's books during my teenaged days, I think I should check out his latest works since I've been neglecting them... it's my reading mood!!
Edge of the Page - Indeed it is!
Wendy - I think it's wonderful that your family share the passion for reading. I'm the only reader in the family. I'm so glad to know you all as we can chat about books all the time! :D
Margaret - I think reading comes naturally. It's the passion! ;)
Violet - Thanks! You and I are very much alike. :)
Gautami - It's great to have family members who share our passion for reading!
Nymeth - Ah, no wonder you're a great fan of fairy tales! It started from young! ;)
Julia - It's always good to cultivate good reading habits from young, isn't it? Teachers do play a part in the reading, and I think that's important.
Beth - Although my parents don't read books to me, but I learnt to read newspapers from them. :)
Alice - I remember there was a neighbour whose daughter has a whole shelf of Enid Blyton's books. I was so in awe.
Iliana - I was a sucker for those 'Sweet Dreams' books then! If only we were studying in the same school, haha!
I hadn't been reading lots during the break, but I did have a great time with the little ones! :D
