Melody

Today’s question is suggested by Carrie.

What’s the most desperate thing you’ve read because it was the only available reading material? If it was longer than a cereal box or an advertisement, did it turn out to be worth your while?

Don’t forget to leave a link to your actual response (so people don’t have to go searching for it) in the comments—or if you prefer, leave your answers in the comments themselves!

What an interesting question! Well, I can't say I'd run out of reading material because there are so many TBR books waiting for me to choose from at home.

But I remember there was a time I was in need of a book; it was my trip to New Zealand some years back. I brought a book (Contest by Matthew Reilly) along and read it in the plane. Ended up I finished the book in one sitting...but that also means I won't have anything to read while resting in the hotels or on the way back!

I had no choice but to read hotel brochures, tour maps etc (although it wasn't considered a bad thing, but I thought it'd be better to read a book instead before going to bed). Finally during the last few days before departure, I spotted a bookstore and bought a book! I was so thrilled. LOL. So from then on, I make sure I bring a thicker book.

Haha! I guess we all have our own desperate moments when it comes to reading. I don't think it's a bad thing to read maps and brochures, but for someone who considers reading a pleasurable pastime, anything like that may not be. Hehe. Well, you've lived to tell the tale!

Hi Melody - True it not bad to read maps or brochures but most people does it when on long trips. I'm so glad though that you finally found booksore to get more books.

Oh *perk my ears up* Did I hear you said next time you will bring thicker books? Well..let me recommend you a...Series books to read LOL!

    Happy BTT to you!

  3. Alice Says:

There Mel, Julia is on to her Series books again. Hahahaha.

    Happy BTT!

Well, at least your desperate reads are somewhat normal.

Bet I'm the only one to claim mine.

Or, the only one who will admit it!

  5. When you're desperate, anything will do!

    Here is mine!

  6. Debi Says:

Kind of a scary thought to be without a book! I always waaaaaaay overpack...not clothes, but books!

My story is similar, but I was luckier!

  8. Daphne Says:

I always take 2 extra books with me when I travel - just in case. When we went to Hawaii I think I took 4 big ones! My husband kept teasing me that we were going to need an extra bag for my books.

  9. CeeCee Says:

I'm like Debi, I pack a sanity pack full of books. Happy BTT!

  10. When I travel I always pack at least 5 books. Usually I also buy some while I am away. I'm obsessed I guess. You'd think this would prevent me from reading things that can be viewed as desperate, but I still read things others would only read out of desperation!

Lesson learned: pack more books ^_^

I wouldn't say no to a series too.

    Happy Thursday, Melody!

    Hey Melody!

I usually try to make a point to leave my house with 2 books instead of just 1 on the off chance that I finish the book I'm reading and need another one to start. I'm weird like that. =)

    Happy BTT! =)

You can never pack enough books! Happy BTT!

  14. Carrie K Says:

I usually take enough books too, but I was caught short ONCE. Hopefully only once.

Brochures sounds pretty much like fun! Not exactly a book but not the back of a cat litter box either....;)

Hi, Mel! I usually pack two books when I take a trip...but when I'm desperate to read something I DO read maps. I hope this doesn't sound too weird, but I enjoy reading maps...at anytime of the day, month or year! Sometimes I just Google unusual places on their mapsite! I love mapquest, too! Okay, I guess I'm going overboard here.

During my daughter's band camp last summer, I forgot to pack a book, so I borrowed one from another parent. It was one of James Patterson's novels. I couldn't even get through the first chapter! Hahaha!

Hi Kat, you hit the point! LOL.

Hi Julia, how come I'm not suprised that you'd suggest that? LOL.

Hi Alice, you know Julia so well, hehe.

Hi cj, to me a true reader will read absolutely everything! Who cares what those items are anyway, hehe.

Hi Marianne, I agree with you!

Hi Debi, you'll overpack books? I mean, more than 2 is considered too many for me, hehe.

Hi Teabird, you're so lucky to have enough books to read!

Hi Daphne, I wish my hubby will agree with me about bringing more than 2 books for our trips! Hehe.

Hi Cee Cee, I can't imagine packing loads of books! Gosh, what about the souvenirs?? LOL.

Hi JC, you are worse! 5 books! LOLOL. I think the hubs will forbid me to travel with him! LOL.

Hi Den, I agree. More books...er..at least thicker ones. Hehe.

Hi Rowena, you aren't weird. It's normal!

Hi Kristy, yeah...more books! More books! I will keep this in mind!

Hi Carrie, one lesson is enough for me! LOL.

Hi Kathy! You're just like my DH. He wouldn't mind reading maps. But to me, they remind me of geography! LOL.

    Thanks all for commenting.
    Have a great weekend. :D

I did something similar once so am always careful to take more books than I think I will need. We went to Greece when I was growing up and I took about 8 books which my mum was most annoyed at. Turns out I finished them all, read my mums book and then started on some randoms who was staying at the same hotel!
