Today’s MUSING MONDAYS post is about the library…
I love visiting the library, but I rarely do so now due to time constraint and the fact that I would prefer to read books at my own pace rather than being pressurized to read and to return them on time. Most of the books I have at present are bought from either the bookstores or used bookstores; occasionally I will get them from BookMooch and that is about all.
How often do you visit the library? Do you have a scheduled library day/time, or do you go whenever? Do you go alone, or take people with you?
However, I will answer these questions based on the time when I had just started out to work. I remember during those times, I would visit the library once in every two weeks after work. The library is situated very near to the place where I worked so distance is not a problem to me at all. There were also not many people at that time as most students would have gone home then, and moreover it was near to dinner time. I loved visiting the library during the weekdays because it was quieter as there were not many people as compared to the weekends. Weekends were mostly for families as the parents would bring their children along.
Even though I hardly visit the library nowadays, that does not mean I will stop visiting again. Who knows? I might visit the library very soon now that my eldest daughter is five and it is about time I should bring her to the library.
How about you? Do you visit the library and how often do you do so?
one way or the other, all my reading these days seem to involve a time schedule. I rarely get books from the library but I just got one this week and since it is a 'new' book it can not be renewed...more pressure! lol
it is great that you are getting ready to take your daughter. I had to beg my Mom to take me when I was younger.
Mine is up here
I don't use the library these days, but I do have fond memories of them from my childhood and college years. I worked in the university library during my undergrad years--loved that job!
Caite - New books are always very popular in the libraries. I remember I was really thrilled when I managed to get new books from the libraries because the chances were so rare. I always compare this experience with Lotto because it's all about luck, LOL.
Erika - School libraries are great if one does not have to travel all the way to the public libraries. That's why I missed those school days so much!
Wendy - Indeed! Those days are the best! You know, I'd love to be a librarian if given a chance, haha.
I used to visit the library too when I was a student. Although my library does not have many choices I really didn't have any option. But since I started earning I mostly buy all my books, and i get some for review too. So i kind of don't remember when I went to the library last time.
I agree with you on the time constraint, it puts an unnecessary pressure to finish the book on time.
I like to go when the library is quieter too, which is why I don't go during school holidays or on Saturdays. Our libraries are closed on Sundays.
I avoid the libraries at the weekends.I like it when it's quieter. I took both of my children to the library from about a year old! My mum has always worked in a library and I remember going with her in the holidays from a veryyoung age and I loved it. Mum's work days were the best days in the holidays!
Normally, I order my library books online and they are delivered to my door, so I don't need to visit. (Parking can be difficult!) But if I run out of something good to read or if I have some spare time, I will stop in just to browse. I consider it a little treat!
I bet your library has some programs for children. I loved going to story hour when I was little.
The only things I get from the library are DVDs and audio books. I think it's a combination of the time constraints and my own towering TBR that makes me not take out print books. I'm a slow reader and like to read at my own pace.
My answer's up. I love my library but could use it much more than I do. I'm sure I will.
Hi!
99% of my books come from the library. I don't have the money in our budget to buy books. Have a great day!!
Sherrie
I am fortunate to have two really good libraries close by! But I do avoid it on the weekends!
I miss our school libraries-they were great. I always worked as a librarian's assistant - fed my book addiction. I don't go anymore - would prefer to buy and keep my books and not have to return them. My post is up.
I go about once or twice per month, but I know what you mean, I dont like having to feel rushed to read the books and have them back in time.

A lot of libraries have started to update and keep their collection online so you can browse and renew online too. You should see if yours does that (you don't know how many fines I've saved myself of at the last second lol).
Violet - Although our public libraries have lots of varieties, I find it is hard to borrow some of the books at times, especially the new releases! And I think getting review copies are great! These days, I'm so tied up with my books that I've to turn down the offers from authors and so forth. :(
Margaret - Our public libraries used to close on Sundays too, but now they open (half a day I think) due to requests, I assume.
Jo - Wow, I'm envious! Looks like I've to start bringing my daughter to the library very soon! ;)
Sandy - That's great that you don't have to travel to get those library books. I wish our public libraries here do that!!
Beth - Yes. They do have children programs occasionally. I like their storytelling hours.
Yvonne - I can be a slow reader too. ;) I find listening to audio books is a good way of lessening our book piles, haha, but sadly I'm not a big fan of audio books.
Mary - Yes, we booklovers could not do anything without the libraries! :D
Bluestocking - I'm glad to hear I'm not alone, hehe.
Sherrie - I'll visit the libraries if I've more time!
Nise - It's great to have our libraries nearby, isn't it?
Robin - I missed my school libraries too. Although their books are quite limited, but I love the ambience and everything in it.
Naida - Yes, I hate to be rushed. It applies to my book shopping too, LOL.
Jen - I've no idea if our public libraries have that facilities. I've not been to the libraries for ages! LOL. Maybe I should check it out.
I sinmply love places with books in them. A place where you can just take books home for free, to me is like heaven! So i visit the library very often, even if I end up not taking anything. I love to browse. And normally if I pass by the cookery section, I always take one or two!
Valentina - Any book place is a good place to us booklovers! :)
I don't go to the library very often either, but there is a new one being built right down the road. I think I'll continue reading from my shelves, but I'm interested in checking out audiobooks. I've started listening to them on my way to/from work (2 hours a day), and I've really enjoyed them so far!
I share your thoughts. I love my library days when I was in primary school though. :)
Trish - I don't know why, but I can't get into audiobooks. I want to read them as in black and white, LOL.
Alice - Ah...school days are the best! :)
