Musing Mondays

When reading do you read every word? Do you ever skip chapters or skim over parts? (question courtesy of Wendy)

I try to read every word in a book. Very rarely I would skip chapters or skim over parts unless I feel the story is not progressing or the story no longer held my interest. Even if I encounter any one of these, I always give it a second chance and try to read a little more, hoping there is a turn in the story but if it continues not to hold my interest, I will just give up the book but that would be the last resort.

On the other hand, I would re-read a passage all over again if I happen to love it or if I don't get into it the first time.

How about you? Do you read every word?

I skim when I get bored or if there's too much narration going on.

    Have a great week!

  2. Sandy Nawrot Says:

I'm too anal retentive to skim or skip. I read everything, and if I feel I didn't quite get it, I read it again. That's why I'm so slow!

I read every word too unless I don't enjoy it then I just put it aside.

    Here's my musing

Bluestocking - I'd love to re-read some of my favourites, but I've to give them a miss since I've so many books waiting for me to read! ;)

Yvonne - Yes, too much narration can be another reason but it all has to depend how interesting they are.

You too have a great week!

Sandy, Jen - I'm glad we share the same sentiments, haha.

That's some patience you got there! I could never read every word if the book is unbearable.

But plodding through has it rewards sometimes. Especially with the classics.

  6. Nise' Says:

If I am skimming too much then its a good bet the book is not holding my attention.

  7. Beth F Says:

I skim! Sometimes I don't want to give up on a book before I find out the ending!

  8. Jenny Girl Says:

You are quite the trooper. good for you though!
I find it's easier to give up a book than skim or skip also.

  9. Debi Says:

Oh gosh, I could never skim. Way to obsessive, I guess. And like you, I often reread passages...because I love them, or didn't understand them, or caught myself daydreaming and not actually picking up on everything.

  10. Sometimes I'll reread a particular passage that is especially wonderful. That is rare though, usually I am just quickly reading, wanting to find out what happens next.

  11. Erika Powell Says:

I love marking passages to go back and reread. but i am the same way there is minimal skimming, i like to really get the full grasp of the book. Even if it is just so I can say, yeah i read every word and I still didn't like it

  12. Robin M Says:

Yes, I do find myself rereading passages because they were just so amazing. I also finding that when I reread a book, I will read it just as I did the first time, but will discover something I missed.

    My post is up now.

  13. Ana S. Says:

I'm definitely not a skimmer. Like you, I re-read passages I love again and again!

  14. Darlene Says:

I never skip chapters but I will skim over parts that are boring me silly and just take what I need if there is actually anything worth taking in order to understand the story.

  15. The Bookworm Says:

I dont like to skim either. And I re-read passages I love too.

Ariel - I tend to re-read more when it comes to classics because of their language. They're beautiful but yet it could be hard to comprehend at times. ;)

Nise - I agree with you there.

Beth - I'm like you on that too! ;)

Jenny - I do give a book a second chance if it doesn't hold my attention, but I'll give up if it doesn't seem to progress much.

Debi - LOL. I'm glad we're alike in some of our reading habits!

Kate - Yes, I find I've not much time to re-read when it comes to the thriller or horror genres, I want to find out what happens next!

Erika - I love marking passages too! Some are so beautiful or thought-provoking that I've to jot it down on journals.

Robin - I wish I've more time to re-read some of my favourite books! These days my reading time is mostly devoted to books I haven't read!

Nymeth - I always keep my post-it tags handy just to note my favourite passages, hehe.

Dar - I'm afraid that if I skim, I'd lose some parts of the story but that's so rare unless I really find the story so boring.

Naida - I'd re-read some of my favourite passages sometimes after I've just finished the book, so that I'd relive that experience again, hehe.

  17. It isn't often, but sometimes I do come across an awfully descriptive paragraph that really does nothing for moving the story along and I'll skim it. I've never skipped entire chapters or even pages though.

  18. Melody Says:

Wendy - Indeed! I also don't like reading dialogues that are long and doesn't really help much with the plot. I'll skim those too if they tend to get to nowhere... perhaps I'm too picky, haha!

  19. Alice Says:

Definitely every word for me unless it's really, really, utterly horrible. :)

  20. Melody Says:

    That's right, Alice! :P
