I think half of my reading time are spent outdoors. That is because I read during the commute (it takes me about an hour to travel to work and vice versa), and also to pass the time I read while queueing or waiting. Seriously, I cannot imagine myself doing anything else but read during those moments.Today’s MUSING MONDAYS post is about tidy reading around people.
When is it inappropriate to read in front of others? Is it ever appropriate?
I remember when I was younger, my mother used to tell us to have proper etiquette while having our meals at the dining table (and that includes no reading at the table). Overall, I think it all has to depend on situations. It is definitely inappropriate and rude to read while having conversations (which also refers to any other things that require your attention) with others. Another thing that I feel inappropriate and annoys me is when someone read their newspapers in a packed commute; besides the brushing of papers I also feel they are taking up the space which could allocate for more commuters.
What about you?
Mailbox Monday is hosted by Marcia from The Printed Page.
These are the books I received last week:
1) Midori by Moonlight by Wendy Nelson Tokunaga (bought from Amazon)
After reading and enjoyed Love in Translation by the same author, I knew I have to get this one!2) Burn by Ted Dekker & Erin Healy (review copy)
Those open arms with newspaper in the train really bug me.
I couldn't imagine reading on eating time! That is certainly something my parents won't allow.
I often read when I eat alone, especially during my lunch break at work, but I wouldn't do it if I was eating with someone else--unless it was agreed upon that we'd both be reading.
Your new books look good, Melody! I hope you enjoy them.
Matt - Exactly! I wish they can be more considerate.
Cutlex - Not only eating at the dining table is not appropriate but I find it hard to concentrate too, especially when you've to compete with food! :P
Wendy - Eating while reading alone is completely fine IMO. Sometimes, my coworkers and I will read after we have our lunch as we don't mind having some personal time even though we are sitting together. :)
I share Wendy's answers. :D
I can't wait for your review of the Dekker book. I've read a few of his books and really enjoyed them.

I think its rude to read while chatting with others too.
Great mailbox this week, happy reading.

Same here. I'll read on the train to and from work but never in situations where i'm 'socialising' with people. I wouldn't like it so why should I do it? :P
I agree people shouldn't take up extra space with a newspaper. Buy a book instead - it takes up no room.
As for reading when eating, I do especially as I'm alone a lot. I don't do it when others are around unless it's my parents or somebody where it's agreed we are both reading.
I do take my book to appointments - pretty much everywhere I go just in case I can get in a few minutes of reading time. lol.
Alice - :)
Anna - I've not read anything by Ted Dekker so I'm really looking forward to that book.
Naida - Unless we're all chatting about books that is, LOL!
Ceri - It definitely helps to pass the time reading in the train, isn't it?
Dar - You said it, hehe. And yes, I bring my book everywhere because you just don't know when you'd need it! :P
yikes, glad i use a reader device instead of bringing a paper in commuter transport. Here's mine
