One of my favorite sci-fi authors (Sharon Lee) has declared June 23rd Fantasy and Science Fiction Writers Day.

As she puts it:

"So! In my Official Capacity as a writer of science fiction and fantasy, I hereby proclaim June 23 Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Day! A day of celebration and wonder! A day for all of us readers of science fiction and fantasy to reach out and say thank you to our favorite writers. A day, perhaps, to blog about our favorite sf/f writers. A day to reflect upon how written science fiction and fantasy has changed your life."

So … what might you do on the 23rd to celebrate? Do you even read fantasy/sci-fi? Why? Why not?

I love fantasy! As for sci-fi, I rarely read them but I do love sci-fi movies (i.e. Star Wars!).

I think it is great that sci-fi author, Sharon Lee, has declared a day to honour these two genres since it seems to me that they tend to get lesser recognition as compared to other genres.

As for June 23rd, I might want to read a fantasy novel in honor of this celebration but that will depend if I have finished the two books which I am currently reading.

What about you? Do you read fantasy/sci-fi books? What would you do on June 23rd?

I have an aversion to stars Wars and I really don't know why. I haven't seen a single Star Wars movie till date :)

I love Stars Wars! awesome TV series in old day

I'm thinking of trying to read the 3rd book of HP book. I delay it for long period already!

    Happy Thursday!

That's okay, Violet... we've more than made up for you at my house. We've watched all six, own them and even have watched the Ewok movie and the cartoon series. AND, for good measure, own and obsessively watch Spaceballs. :-D Love Mel Brooks, too ;-)

  4. Melody Says:

Violet - To each his own. :)

Julia - I haven't finished the HP series too! I need to catch up on that one, but am not sure when though.

Koolaidmom - Wow, you're definitely a Star Wars fan! ;)

I love Star Wars too. =) I can't stand any of the books though. I have friends who are very into them. I think it's because apparently the movies are space operas and more like fantasy, whereas most of the books are actually science fiction.

I have a fantasy book coming up on my TBR pile, maybe the day and the book will magically coincide!

  6. Novroz Says:

    I haven't found other great sci-fi books...but so far I love Crichton's works

  7. Shari Says:

Up until about 2 years ago, I had never seen a Star Wars movie! Then my husband bought all the DVD's and we watched them one after the other. Not my favs, but did enjoy it!

  8. Oh yeah, I do love Star Wars. . .it was the first movie I ever saw in a theater. (gives a clue to my age ;)

I agree. . .I tend to like Sci-Fi movies more than books!

  9. Yvonne Says:

I'm the opposite - I like sci-fi more than fantasy, but I don't read alot of either genres. Although I do love sci-fi movies and TV shows.

  10. Jess Says:

I think it's a great idea as well.

Like you I read more fantasy than sci-fi. Love sci-fi television though. I'm planning to make a cake on the 23rd!

  12. Anonymous Says:

I also read more fantasy than science fiction. I am going to get a book to read for the 23rd too. Happy BTT!

  13. Alice Says:

Hi Melody! I enjoy both but I love fantasy more. *GRIN*

I will be reading a fantasy book in celebration of June 23 but am trying to decide between two titles...

  14. Ana S. Says:

Well, you know my answer :D I have a plan for June 23rd...I just hope I find the time to actually put it into action.

  15. Iliana Says:

It's so weird to me how I don't really like sci-fi too much but I do love sci-fi movies! ha. Must be the special effects stuff :)

Now Fantasy I can get more on board with. I wonder if it's because I like magical realism...

I'll have to mark the date for the celebration!

  16. Kat Says:

I don't know about you but where I'm at, sci-fi and fantasy definitely don't lack for attention! :D

    Here is mine :)

  17. Hmmm-June 23rd is a Tuesday? I don't read very much science fiction either, but I've been reading more fantasy over the past year and a half. I find I relate to fantasy better than science fiction--perhaps because science fiction is SO foreign sometimes? And the names are hard to pronounce. :P Do you have a favorite fantasy book/series?

Meghan - I haven't read any books on Star Wars. If I've more time, I'd have read them too!

Novroz - I think I'd only read one book by Crichton so far. So many books, so little time! *sigh*

Shari - I don't think I'll ever get tired of watching Star Wars again and again. ;)

Amy - I think it's the special effects that makes us all drawn to those sci-fi movies, eh? ;)

Yvonne - You'll have to recommend some great sci-fi titles to me!

Jess - Glad you think so too! :)

Jennifer - That's great that you're going to make a cake for the celebration! Be sure to post a picture to share! ;)

Charli - I think I've a clue on what fantasy book to read on that day! :D

Alice - I can't wait to hear what you'll choose for that day! ;)

Nymeth - I look forward to whatever plans you've in mind! :D

Iliana - It sure is the special effects! :D I've The Host by Stephenie Meyer and I've heard several raves about that book. I'm looking forward to reading it soon!

Kat - I wish I've the passion for sci-fi as much as I do for fantasy!

Trish - That's what I think! LOL. Hmm... I can't think of any titles right now but I think I'll choose Colleen Gleason's or JK Rowling's. :D

    Anthonynorth - Welcome! :)

Naida - I'm hoping the books will be as good as the movies! ;)
