Melody

I had a post ready for today, but I liked this suggestion from Chris even better, so … thanks, Chris!

Here’s something for Valentine’s Day.
Have you ever fallen out of love with a favorite author? Was the last book you read by the author so bad, you broke up with them and haven’t read their work since? Could they ever lure you back?

I have to say my reading depends a lot on my mood at that moment. A book that doesn't interest me in the beginning doesn't mean I will not read them in future. Besides my moods, my reading preference and recommendations from other readers play a part too. I wouldn't say I have ever fallen out of love with a favourite author, because there must be something interesting about the stories that had me hooked in the first place, just that their writing style has changed. For example, some of my favourite authors have switched from writing historical romance to romance suspense (or paranormal romance), but I can not say I fall out of love for their works just because I think the genre they write is not as good as compared to the other genre. After all, they are different genres and it wouldn't be fair to compare them. And even if a book doesn't interest me, I will still keep a look out for the other books because each story/plot is different. I hope my answer makes sense. ;-)
Finally, Happy Valentine's Day, everyone! :D

Oops, I'm sorry about the deletion above -- simply had to fix a horrendous typo!

Your answer makes sense to me -- insightful and well thought-out! Certainly authors who have written for many years change over time, and sometimes they experiment with new styles, different genres. And usually, I'm quite willing to go with them, to see what they can do when they stretch their muscles. :)

Happy BTT, and Happy Valentine's Day!

Melody - really agree with you. But than long lost sister, are us LOL! Happy Valentine's Day!

  3. CJ Says:

I wouldn't mind that sort of change but to go from good story telling to bad is where I draw the line.

No worries, Thomma Lyn! I have that fixed. :) Thanks for your comment.

Julia, Happy Valentine's Day to you too! :D

CJ, I fully agree with you on that, but so far I haven't had this experience, yet.

Happy Valentine's Day to you, Melody! Hope you and your hubby get a chance to do something special!

*sigh* Yes, I broke up with LKH about 2 years ago. It's still a little painful, but I think I'm happier now that I'm not reading her books and remembering when I used to love them. :)

  7. Yes, sometimes writers change genres and I just can't change with them.

I'm glad you haven't had a favorite author break your heart! Tis quite emotional when it happens.

    Happy Valentines Day and BTT!

I was hugely disappointed my Colleen McCullough too. I did not like her book A Creed for the Third Millennium. It is no where as good as her other books. However, I will read her, no doubt.

Great answer, Melody! I thought that was such a fun question.

  11. Great answer!

I don't think I stick with any one author long enough to really catch the trends, myself. I tend to flit here and there, reading whatever catches my fancy at the time. Not sure if this is good or bad. ;)

Good answer! I love to stick with authors and I am very disappointed when they change abruptly. But I read alot more variety nowadays so that doesn't happen so often.

Kathy, I hope you and your husband have a wonderful Valentine's Day too!! :)

Darla, lately I've heard a lot of comments about LKH's books that she doesn't live up to the expectations anymore. I'm disappointed to hear that, because I've a few of her earlier books in my pile and I'm thinking of buying the whole series... guess I've to think twice now. :(

Chris, it really saddens me to see my favourite authors change genres. I'm still hoping that they'll switch back to writing their best genre. *sigh*

Kim, I can understand about the emotional part.

Gautami, I've not heard of Colleen McCullough, but like you I'd still read the author if the books grab my attention!

Thanks, Debi! I like the question this week too, Chris had thought it well. ;)

Heather, thank you. There's nothing wrong with your preference. To each his own. :)

Thanks, Jaimie. I'm with you; it saddens me if I find my favourite authors don't write the genre anymore... but I'm glad to say I too am reading alot more variety nowadays, thanks to all my bookblog friends! :)

Very Nice answer, Melody!! I used to be a mood reader. Then all these challenges started taking over my reading!! I think I need to get back to the reading for me thing!

I think you're more loyal than me, Melody. :-) There's so much to read that if an author rubs me the wrong way (that's not the best choice of words, but I can't think how else to phrase it), it'll be a loooong time before I pick up one of their books again.

  16. Melody Says:

Thanks, Stephanie. :) I agree that challenges do influence our reading in some ways eh?

Trish, maybe I am. LOL. But if the author continues to write badly or if their books don't interest me anymore, I will probably stop reading them too! ;)
