Musing Mondays

Today’s MUSING MONDAYS post is about books for children…

Do you buy books as gifts for children – either your own or those of friends or family? Would you buy books for all children, or only children who are already practiced readers?

I always believe that it is good to cultivate good reading habits from young, so books are usually one of my favourite to-buy items on my gift list, no matter whatever the occasion is (i.e. birthday, Christmas etc). For children who are already practiced readers, I will try to learn more about their reading preference so I would know what to buy them in future; and as for children who do not read much, I will find out what are their likes and will buy the books based on them (or at least something similiar to them) and hopefully this will nurture them to be a reader.

What about you?

  1. Books are my favorite gifts to give adults and children. I don't have many children in my life and so don't often have cause to browse the children's section anymore. And now that my mother will be retiring from teaching, getting books for her class is not really an option. It is sad, in a way, I suppose. But life does move on.

Off topic, I received Ritual. Thank you so much, Melody!

  2. I love giving books, too! I loved getting books as a kid, too. Still do ; ).

Wendy - I love giving books to anyone. Otherwise, gift vouchers are great options too! ;)

I'm glad you received the book. I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I did!

The Book Resort - I love giving and receiving books. I find it a great accomplishment to influence a non-reader into reading! ;)

I would LOVE to gift books to children but I haven't yet, not the one that counts. My best friend is having a baby this December and I can't wait for him/ her to grow up so I can buy children's books as gifts.
I once gifted a book to a child but the parents hate reading so they never even opened the book :)

  5. Alice Says:

Your kids are so lucky to have you as their mother. I'm sure you're already showering them with books now. Haha!

P/S: About your question on BookDepository, my books take about two to three weeks to reach me. I hope it's the same for Singapore. :)

I wish I had children in my life to give books too... my friends had better starting having kids soon :P But seriously, nothing makes a better gift than a book.

  7. Wanda Says:

Starting with the baby showers before they even get here, I give and love to read books to all the children in my life!

I think the greatest gift that you can give a person is a love of reading, and giving a child a book of their very own, hopefully about a subject that interests them, is a great way to start.

There's something about a new book.. I love that feeling!

  10. Ceri Says:

I always end up buying books for my friends and family because I hate the idea that, in general, people don't read any more. I don't know too many children but I can't imagine them being an exception if I did. I love books, I love talking about books, and I love it when children are passionate about books. :-D

I love to buy books as gifts but it really depends on some kids. If it's children I know pretty well and know they are readers then I do give them books. I love to give them books I loved as child too :)

Violet - I always find it a pity that some parents don't instill the interest of reading to their children, as I think this also helps to strengthen their bonds too.

Alice - Thanks! Yes, I buy books to my daughter most of the times! And she loves it! :D

PS: Thanks for your reply. We shall see when I'll receive my first book from BookDepository. ;)

Nymeth - I think books are the best gifts for children, besides toys that is. ;)

    Wanda - That's great, Wanda!!

    Caite - I agree!!

Judy - I love everything about books... from the new book smell to flipping through the pages. I enjoy the overall reading experience! :)

Ceri - I love talking about books with adults, so why not children too? :D

Kathy - Books make a great gift! Otherwise, books vouchers are great too!

Naida - I always try to get at least a book as gifts for my nieces or nephews. As you said, it's good to get them reading at a young age! :)

  15. Melody Says:

Iliana - We must have cross-post, LOL.

I love to give the children the books I loved as a child. It always bring me such wonderful memories. But the best thing is having them telling you that they love and enjoy the books! :) To me, that's a wonderful feeling and not to mention feeling you've accomplished something! :P

  16. Veens Says:

Gosh! it totally will depend if the kid will read it. if it is somebody i can be around with, then definitely i will MAKE it read :)

i have only gifted books to my sis :)

  17. Melody Says:

Veens - I'll try to buy other things if the children I gave the books to aren't interested in them, but at least I tried. :)

  18. Julia Says:

I always buy books for my friend's kids. Their mom read the book to them while they in bed, trying to sleep for the night :)

My niece Trish, used to read (as far as I know) but I haven't seen her read anything lately. Wondering she lost interested in reading....

  19. Melody Says:

Julia - Bedtime stories are great IMO! :P
